Happy 3rd Birthday to our sweet Autumn Elizabeth! We can't believe that 3 full years have passed since we welcomed you with love, kisses and cuddles into our arms. How can it be?? Your love for so many things girlie (i.e. princesses, tea parties, dress up and sweets) was the inspiration for this birthday bake shop theme. I had so much fun planning from the homemade decor to the ruffle-sewn aprons, old-fashioned mini rolling pins and cupcakes galore! My dear friend Tawnia offered to host the bake shop in her backyard and of course I had help from my family who helped me set up as well as photograph the details. Here are some of the best shots from the day!

Lessons from a Sunflower

A few months back Autumn and I casually planted a handful of sunflower seeds from a "do-it-yourself" gardening kit for kids. We poured the 3 seeds into a small child's cup and filled it with water to sit on our kitchen windowsill. It was all I could do to keep my daughter from eating the seeds before they were planted as she still has an immense desire to place any and all things in her mouth (hello oral-fixation!) at the age of almost 3. Autumn was quite excited since she has helped me tend our garden of flowers on our front patio (she loves to water) and both Grammie and MorMor have influenced and encouraged this past-time. We waited patiently, tender greens sprang up and then I helped Autumn transfer the fragile greens and earth to a larger pot for the room the flower would need. Several weeks went by as we watched the green stock shoot up sturdy and strong, unaffected by the elements of wind and sun on our back patio and before we knew it, the face of the flower opened up, coming to life full-force; vibrant and beautiful as if to say, "Hello world, here I am!" Beauty and wonder and the miracle of life hit both of us. I was drawing parallels to the garden of my soul, amazed at how something grows from a tiny seed; Autumn was making new meaning in that fresh mind of hers, looking at the face of a sunflower and saying, "wow!"

Only one seed out of three grew to maturity, producing the flower for us to enjoy. One of the seeds never sprang up and the other (as seen in the pictures) shot up hearty and green but then halfway through stopped growing...interesting. I think somewhere in there, its nutrients were "choked out" by the heartier of the two and truly, there wasn't enough room for both to thrive. I can't help but think of the parable in the Bible of the sower and the seeds. Some seeds fell on shallow soil and never sprang up; some fell onto fertile soil and sprang up but the weeds grew up and choked the seeds; yet others grew up in rich soil and multiplied producing a high-yielding crop. In one of the books I'm reading on parenting, the author talks about the number of spiritual principles we are able to teach our children through planting a garden. Sowing and reaping, simplicity, living and dying. Tangible, living and breathing organisms that parallel our Christian walk.

And staring at OUR sunflower, the one we grew from a tiny seed, I knew why. The sunflower bloomed brilliantly for about 2 weeks and then it began to fade. I wanted to capture its essence and beauty before it fell (and to remember all our hard work !) so that we remember. I'm still searching for meaning from the life of the sunflower we grew, but I do know this: my life is like this flower. Arrayed in splendor, my needs provided for, here today and gone tomorrow (Luke 12:27-28). Springing up into life, reigning triumphantly, growing old and dying. (Ecclesiastes 3:2) The sunflower eventually shriveled; old and gray, and Autumn helped me pick up the pot and throw it in the trash. It isn't just my life that resembles the sunflower but seasons of life as well. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to search and a time to give up. All appointed seasons by a Father who loves us. I am in a season where I want to remember. I want to remember, as I stare at the photograph of Autumn's sunflower, the seasons of my life when I have laughed and danced and began anew. And I also want to remember the times when God has carried me because my legs were too tired to walk, the tears that seem to fill up a bottle, and the pain that at the time appears unbearable. The pattern of death and rebirth is the central metaphor of the Christian life. Beauty for ashes. Like a vase being molded in the hands of a potter; smashed and then re-fashioned, over and over. So when life is hard and I feel like that small piece of mounded clay waiting to be fashioned again, I will remember the sunflower in all its glory, both vibrant and fading, and be thankful for the lessons a garden can teach us.

Fortune Cookies

Last Saturday night while Autumn and I were up at Grammie's in Ventura (really to celebrate Uncle Jordan's homecoming from Afghanistan, but we'll use any excuse to make a trip up to Grammie's house) we stopped for a casual dinner at Peking Chinese restaurant. It was a lazy, sweat pants and no makeup kind of day, the kind where you pretty much roll out of bed, throw your hair up in a bun and well, do nothing. So it was only fitting when dinner rolled around and, amidst preparations for the following afternoon's entertaining and barbeque, I suggested we get Chinese take-out. An order of 'Moo Goo Gai Pan' to-go became a spontaneous dine-in dinner for 3 and soon we were slurping small cups of egg drop soup, with an order of chicken fried rice coming up (because I was just hoping Autumn would be satisfied with some seasoned carbs and protein!). To our surprise, she quite enjoyed the soup and asked for seconds, along with the crunchy noodles and sauce they brought out for our appetizer...no surprises there!! :)
We ate quickly, with casual, intermitent conversation, mostly due to the antsy-ness of Tweetsie girl and the sweet distraction of her cheerful voice singing "Twinkle, Twinkle" like there wasn't anyone for miles and miles. A couple of "shush's" from Grammie and I and reminders to "speak quietly" and "use your restaurant voice" were also a part of the noise. Dinner was delicious. Time for the check....and then, the fortune cookies. I inconspicuously grabbed the one closest to me in proximity (with a hint of superstition and hopefulness, I admit). I'm not usually one of those people who holds onto their fortunes, or keeps it in her wallet to "remember". Instead, holding the fortune quite loosely, I read it and then, dismiss it, pretty soon after leaving the restaurant. But on this night, this ordinary-lazy-no makeup-good for nothing-day, where the hours bleed from one to the next so you're not quite sure when the sun rises and sets, my fortune cookie contained a message I will never forget. The wording isn't so much important as the content and how it resonated with my slow, steady, yet longing heartbeat: "Don't keep looking to the future for happiness....it's right next to you."
At that moment, I looked up to witness the goofy interaction between my mama who was loving my precious daughter, both with mouths full of cookie crumbs, both genuinely happy and stuffed and loved. It didn't matter what their fortune said. My mom was only concerned that Autumn had eaten her portion of the cookie and had nothing left over! But at that moment, it was as if time stood still and I paused long enough to take a mental snap-shot...to remember. Right next to me. All that I want is right next to me. All that I could possibly long for, I have. I long for more, but I have all that I need. Do I believe in fortune cookies? I don't call myself superstitious, but I am a believer. And today I am choosing to believe that God sees me and that I have more than enough. My heart is happy.

Daddy, you are my hero! I love when you swing me up high in the air and take me on LONG walks around the neighborhood. You feed me lots of nutritious foods (carrots!) and squeal with glee at my new discoveries. I think I might have permanent welts on my cheeks from all your kisses, but I don't mind! I know that I am loved...
Thanks for giving me lots of baths, reading "The Daddy Book" to me and teaching me how to pray. Oh, and thanks for looking out for me as I love to run and stumble as I explore. Not to worry, those bumps, booboos and bruises will eventually go away and I'll still be as beautiful as ever! I want you to know that I pray for you often and I thank Jesus that He made you to be a man that serves Him passionately, obediently and humbly. Best of all, He chose you to be MY daddy and I will always be thankful.

Good times. Drove 7 hrs yesterday back from Redwood City. Had a good drive in spite of the weather and my failure to get a new windshield wiper in time for the fun weather (passenger side). Dad - they were closed the the night before when we left and I wasn't about to slow down our departure to beat LA traffic (which we hit at 3pm - ugh, got home by 4:30pm).

Been a good day to clean up a bit, be relaxed and play with our littler fever girl. She is doing well for being sick but we are watching her temp and giving her meds every few hours to keep her temp down.

Looking forward to a relaxing night - heck, Joy and I might even stay up to read past 10pm.

Videos and picts of our fantastic Christmas with Joy's and My families will be coming shortly. That is, if I remember how to do it on the blog:).

Our sweet Autumn Elizabeth is ONE! Where did the year go?? Here are most recent pics of her taken by Grandpa and MorMor during their visit the last week of September. Autumn is truly a joy and brings so much delight each and every day. She now points at everything she is curious about and babbles nonstop! She can say "da-da", "mom", "bye-bye" and I'm almost positive she has said "book" ;). She loves to hug and kiss her stuffed animals one by one and gives kisses whenever asked! Autumn is days away from walking hands-free. She scoots all over the room in a matter of minutes and will walk on her own from one object to the next without hesitating. I don't think she realizes how stable she really is and will lose confidence and tumble to her bottom. She continues to eat like a beast! As Grammie says, "I don't think I've seen her refuse any food that is put in front of her!" She now eats spaghetti, macaroni and cheese (with veggies of course!), fruity puree cookies (homemade by mommy) and lots of chicken! For her birthday yesterday we took her to get a special fruit smoothie all her own and she slurped it down...can't say I was surprised.
We are so grateful for the precious gift that Autumn is to us...born in Autumn and already living her namesake by bringing joy to us in each changing season of this first year. Father God thank you for your indescribable gift! We rejoice at the celebration of her first year of life! We love you sweetzie girl, Autumn Elizabeth Kerr.

So I think I am officially deserving of the title "Mom of the Day"...
Let me give you a recap:
7:00-8:00am Saturday, August 1
Daddy is on a leisurely bike ride at the butt crack of dawn :) Mom on the scene...
Autumn wakes up....not in the best of moods, rather cranky I might say,
Nursing period, diaper change.
Persisting diaper rash that flares its ugly head on a REGULAR basis,
Requires exposure to air, hanging out naked and special concoction of shea butter and coconut oil.
Bath time, happy demeanor, clean butt, yay!
Time to play naked for a short time while mommy hangs out and QUICKLY rests her eyes ;)
Autumn begins to grunt while standing up against bookshelf,
Mommy opens eyes just in time to see Autumn going poo-poo...AHHH!
Sheet saver mat grabbed swiftly, not swiftly enough, poop falls to carpet...shifting foot smooshes it down!
Screaming ensues while mommy tries to catch remaining bowel movement...poop remains cover Autumn's foot
Mommy moves Autumn to bath towel while she cleans up,
She turns back only to discover baby has now peed all over towel, GREAT!
Crying, Screaming, Tears....don't stop.
"Let's get the diaper on now" mommy says, but FIRST the diaper rash concoction.
Wiggling, squirming, flailing arms..."Dear God, please help me!"
One loose hand grabs liquid coconut oil...SPLASH! Oil quickly seeps into carpet
Crying.
Mommy trying to remain under control, trying to secure the diaper on Autumn's body.
Finally!
Now to all the clean up...who cares about putting her clothes on!
It's time for breakfast
Crying continues, rather emotional I'm deducting.
Place Autumn in high chair...FINALLY a happy face!! Food! "I love to eat!"
Front door opens, daddy is back.
Autumn smiles.....
Mommy breathes a sigh of relief! Now off to shower...

Autumn and I spent the first week of July in Washington DC visiting my brother Jordan and his wife Lindsay. We had a fantastic visit and Autumn did great...although I must say it was nice to have a second pair of hands to help since my mom traveled with us. Our time was spent relaxing at Jordan and Lindsay's house (at Bolling Air Force base) and doing some sight-seeing. This was my third visit to our nation's capital, but this time around I was able to enjoy it from the perspective of someone who lives there. Jordan drove us all around the city! We stopped at quaint places to eat, walked around Georgetown, shopped in Alexandria and watched fireworks over the monuments from across the Potomac River! A once-in-a-lifetime experience (at least for me!). Best of all Uncle and Auntie got to love on their sweet niece Autumn and their dogs Cooper and Charlie did as well! Enjoy some of the best pics as well as the captions...

Cooper is so curious about this little baby...once Autum warmed up to the dogs she LOVED watching them run all over the place and would stretch out her hand to touch. She was overwhelmed with doggy kisses!

Autumn is 9 months old! What a drastic change we have seen in her over the past month. She is growing by leaps and bounds and we discover something new that she can do almost everyday. The day before we left she popped her first tooth!

We spent one afternoon exploring Mount Vernon, although it was extremely crowded due to the holiday weekend. George Washington is my absolute favorite historical figure and it was fun to walk around the museum....and get rained on! A storm rolled in as we were waiting for the mansion and we were drenched!

My daughter has officially become addicted...thanks to daddy (and mommy?)!

Our last day in the city we spent walking around Georgetown and visiting a couple of the monuments including the new World War II memorial. Wow!! What an amazing tribute to the men and countries that sacrificed so much. The day was hot and Autumn enjoyed dipping her footsies into the pool with Grammie.

The Lincoln Memorial in the background....I ran up the steps to see ol' Abraham but Autumn was conked out in her stroller. She had seen enough! :)

On our way home sitting in Grammie's lap. It is quite difficult to travel with a 9 month old! Autumn was super antsy and wanted to stretch her legs. She enjoyed peering over the seats at the people all around and only slept 30 minutes each flight. Grammie had some surprises in her bag to keep Autumn occupied including fishy crackers and a play cell phone! But overall she was an excellent traveler and has been across the country and back! We missed daddy and were glad to be home!

I'm 8 Months Old!

We can hardly believe that our sweetzie girl is 8 months old! It feels like we blinked and she was 8 months. But we are sure enjoying the gift that she is, the joy that she brings and the laughs we have daily with her!

Little Miss Serious...I pay attention to every detail and don't miss a thing, kinda like mommy!

Here are some things that I can do at 8 months:
I love to stand up and balance on anything and everything! I don't really care about crawling just yet and am very content to sit and play all day long. My favorite toy at the moment is my rainforest bouncer. I don't sit in it anymore, but now I use it to lean against and I love the lights and music from this perspective.

I even ride my homemade rocking horse that mommy had when she was my age. I'm still a little sleepy in this picture and not too thrilled, probably because moments later I tipped over the side! Whoops!

AND...I LOVE hair bows! They make me look soooo ka-ute! Especially now that my hair is growing in long and light brown!

Reducing Waste

So now that I am a "SAHM" I have been doing tons of reading on how to live simply, invest in my home, use resources wisely and give generously. It's like a whole new world has opened up for me and I am enjoying the time that I do have to practice being the wife and mom that God has called me to be. One of the areas that I have been more intentional about is recycling. I desire to be a good steward with our resources, including the world around me. So one of my "baby steps" is to reduce waste by recycling everything possible around our home. I have also commited to reducing our plastic grocery bag consumption by bringing my own bags when I shop! Above is a picture of one of my "zero plastic bag" shopping trips. I know it's simple and kind of lame, but I was super proud of myself and had to take a picture!
I hope to document more of my living simply discoveries as I continue to learn. This week I am reading about all the benefits and uses of vinegar around the home. We'll see where that leads me!

Intolerant Truth

Erin, why are you "messing up this cute blog" that now centers around the beautiful growth of your daughter? Well, because this blog is about the SoCal Kerrs and our whole life - including reflections on how we live our lives.

I ran across this article about Atheism "gaining momentum".Part of what is giving the movement momentum is the proliferation of groups on college campuses. The Secular Student Alliance now has 146 chapters, up from 42 in 2003.

I point this out, not because I am worried about atheists. I am more concerned about people failing to see the logical conclusion that atheism leads to if one is honest. There is almost always some statement in these articles that talk about Christians or others being INTOLERANT of their beliefs. The irony and the issue that many fail to see is the atheist has a total absence of an absolute moral foundation. It's like claiming to build a skyscraper without having a foundation.

The thing that perplexes me about some of the statements in these articles by "secular humanists" is their use of ethical language. Can someone explain that to me? And how can the term "intolerant" be used by a secular humanist? Isn't that an oxymoron? Isn't that self-refuting? Without a belief in a "higher power" or a moral standard (the atheist must believe that man makes the rules), than the secular humanists BASIS/FOUNDATION/ANCHOR is rooted in what? It just becomes a matter of opinion or flavor.

If someone says I am intolerant because I take a stand on how I think the world is, based on the evidence available to us - philosophical, scientific, historical, archaeological even subjective experience... how can disagreement over ideas be intolerant? Now, if I don't treat someone with dignity/respect who happens to be different from me in ideology or ethnicity - that is wrong. But disagreeing on one's view... Isn't this one of the beautiful things about the U.S. - the freedom to have a marketplace of ideas where the truth wins out through dialogue and discussion with dignity?

I am all for allowing Secular Humanist clubs, socal organizations, etc. but I think it is intellectually dishonest, even illusory to have some sort of a moral indignation towards those who disagree with their worldview - THAT IS INTOLERANT.

Some other Thoughts
In my understanding of the evidence, the most compelling and coherent worldview that deals adequately with our human origin, our destiny, our identity and our morality is in Christianity - centrally in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus was the most inclusive and yet intolerant figures in history (according to the cultural definition of intolerance). He loved (loves) all people because God the Father, made everyone in His image. But that does not mean all religions, worldviews, perspectives on salvation, paths to God are equally valid (John 14.6). Jesus did not accept people's belief systems for the sake of TOLERANCE. No way - His ministry was about telling the truth.

The religous leaders of his day missed the point - He rebuked and corrected them.
They needed to know the truth.

The hurt, diseased, broken, poor of his day found healing and hope by his touch, his words and his power over the spirit world as well as the physical. The Stoics, the Epicureans, the other faiths of the time didn't deliver this kind of power and hope.
They neeeded to know and experience the truth.

The disciples and his followers were hoping and anticipating an earthly king of the Jews - the Messiah - but he had to continually help them understand that the Messianic Kingdom was NOT how they thought it would be.
They needed to know the truth - His ministry on earth was the inauguration of a new covenant with God and His people... that the Kingdom of God was available to anyone (Jew and Gentile now!) who placed their faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

Jesus died on a cross and rose from the dead, appeared before 500 people, including his disciples and others before his ascension... why?
They needed to know the truth - He had overcome death and verified his identity as the Messiah, and now they were to go and tell this to the world through the birth of the church, God's family of believers.

Thank goodness for intolerant truth. We can actually be changed, transformed and be forgiven by God who loves us and offers us real, true, abundant and eternal life. This is truly GOOD, intolerant news.

Daddys' Little Girls

Today we had a Saddleback Irvine lunch rendevous! So much fun to all be together with our 3 little girls...they are growing so fast! We met at SuperMex (our favorite Mexican place...my FAVORITE chips n' salsa) for the guys' lunch break...a fun mid-week surprise!

Stay tuned for some coming pics of her first attempt at RICE CEREAL. For the past week I have been pretending to feed her by placing an empty infant spoon in her mouth and she has done great! She opens her mouth wide and seems to anticipate something yummy. BUT, when I gave her the first official taste of rice cereal she spit it right back out (just like all babies)! Her look was like "What the heck is this stuff?!?!?" Oh well...she'll learn.
Autumn Elizabeth is 5 months old now, trying to roll over all the time (even in the bumbo...hilarious!), grabbing anything and everything in sight (including daddy's napkin at lunch that ended up dissolving around her mouth before mommy caught it!), and sleeping in a sleep sack instead of her swaddle, arms free! We love our girl!

Congratulations to Tony, Wendy and Isella with the birth of precious Luisa Kaye Gapastione born this afternoon at 2:17pm, weighing 10.4oz, 20.5 inches!! We are so excited and happy Lulu is finally here!! We love our new baby niece....can't wait to meet her soon. Stay tuned for pictures!

My buddy Kurian (his first name is Mark but no one calls him that unless they don't know him) and I have been talking about these old videos we made for the Mariners College Ministry back in the day, so I thought I would post a few.He honed his acting skills by watching a lot of movies with Ashley Judd.

I have another video that promoted our Spiritual Gifts class called EMERGE. But it involves Kurian, clad only with a towel around his waist and his head, singing as if he is alone in the house to Carrie Underwood's rendition of ALONE on American Idol. It's priceless but I am hoping to get some bribe money for not showing it.

Sweet little Autumn is now over 4 months old...I can't believe how fast time passes. She is always happy, easily entertained and super vocal! I think she's going to be a talker...Her favorite pastime consists of sucking her extremely tasty hands, staring at her hands as they try to grab parrot or giraffey, and grabbing her toes while being changed (as if she is wondering what the heck these things are?) She loves the bumbo....the best invention ever as I am able to clean the kitchen, cook and read while she sits right next to me on the counter. Erin and I cannot help ourselves from smothering her in kisses all day long...she is simply SCRUMPTIOUS right now! We love to call her "munchie girl", "sweetzie", and "pumpkin". She has recently discovered the exersaucer toy where she is able to sit up and grab at really bright and colorful objects in front of her...she is super curious about everything. Her latest accomplishment is rolling over...she learned 2 weeks ago and now loves to roll over the moment she is on her tummy. I love the look on her face once she's rolled over: It's like "hmmm? how did that happen? Strange..." Hope you enjoy the new pics!

Eddie and Karens Wedding

These picts were taken at a wedding that has special significance for me and Joy.

Yesterday, we were at our good friends' Karen and Eddie's Wedding. It was in San Pedro at the Double Tree, overlooking the harbor. It was such a cool occasion for a fantastic couple, and I got the opportunity to perform the ceremony. Out of all the family and friends that came, Joy, Autumn, our couples small group and our worship guy John Stearns and friend "Auntie" Molly came as well.

Eddie and Karen's story is fun. Apparently, Karen (a diehard sports fan and chargers fan) listened regularly to the Fox Sports show Eddie broadcasts on. She appreciated his perspective, his humor and his good nature. She would even call in regulalry - and Eddie NEVER remembered her calls.

It wasn't until years later that they met at a coworkers bday party and began a friendship. They overcame their differences of allegiance - her to the Chargers and him to the Steelers and found themselves moving towards more than friendship. Eddie realized he wasn't going to see this relationship turn into something more serious until he took another look at this Christian stuff Karen was in to. He started coming to Saddleback but still had a lot of doubts. He didn't want to compromise his beliefs and so he started asking questions - this is where I got to start meeting with him regularly to process through his great questions.

Eddie eventually came to Christ at Saddleback Church last year. He was baptized a few months later and popped the question to Karen at a romantic setting - Qualcomm Stadium, Denver vs. San Diego, Monday Night Football. Over the past year they have been a key couple at our new church. He now has been leading our small group, serves in the traffic ministry at Saddleback Irvine and serves alongside Karen in a ton of other ways. We are so happy for them and loved being a part of their story together.

To top things off, Jeannie Wilson (extended family) did the wedding shoot so she took these pictures of us!

Joy and I have also fallen in love with the baby video monitor - set it up tonight. Brilliant.
Autumn's acne is subsiding - now she will be cute to everyone else as well:).
I have also noticed I am watching baby gear commercials with surprising interest like diaper fit technology and such.
I may accidently kiss her right (facial) cheek off if I am not careful.
"Grammy" (Joy's Mom) has discovered Autumn's ability to stand with someone else balancing her.
Joy is a natural at being a fantastic momma.
You are all ridiculously generous - friends, family and church family... meals are still coming this week from church. How can we keep this going until Christmas?
Autumn's #3 ranked favorite spot is being held while me or Joy bounce on the blue yoga ball.
Her perch retains the #2 most desirable location after three weeks ( #1 Mommy).
At 3 weeks old, she has more christmas outfits than I have cowboy paraphenalia.

Prop 8 - What Should I Be Considering?

I am writing this as Erin (and not Joy - not that she disagrees with me, just that she didn't write this, I did).

I am sure you have been thinking a lot about what to vote for on Prop 8. Why are you voting the way you are?

May we dialogue with civility?
What do YOU THINK about Prop 8?
Is Yes on Prop 8 fair or not (and if so, based on what reasoning?)

I know this is an emotional and divisive issue for many and at the risk of being written off immediately due to my profession (licensed pastor), this isn't about attacking the homosexual lifestyle. Anyone who really understands the teachings of the Gospel, knows that hating people is not part of it. The love of God and neighbor is the greatest commandment - this includes people from all walks of life, religion, socio - economic backgrounds and sexual preferences.

I honestly haven't looked at much of the material out there on this issue... I just know the basics and I wanted to share my thoughts as I long to hear yours. I am not arguing for people to change their lifestyle here, I am simply questioning the deconstruction of a traditional marriage definition in the California State Constitution to allow for same sex marriages.

I also understand that this is a deeply emotional issue, and for some are who have placed hopes in being viewed by society as "legalized couples" - this is paramount on their list of "social injustices". Some well-meaning heterosexual people out there maybe even think it "would be the right thing to do" to let the State of California allow the changes to the definition of marriage to include same-sex (meaning No on 8). The tv ads have been pretty good, like most ads, tugging at the emotions, inciting fear or anger...

...but what should I be considering here?

Here is a quote off the NO on Prop 8 website, whose banner reads "Unfair. Wrong." - how so?

“Proposition 8… would eliminate the fundamental right to same-sex marriage. The very act of denying gay and lesbian couples the right to marry – traditionally the highest legal and societal recognition of a loving commitment – by definition relegates them and their relationship to second class status.”
- Los Angeles Times Editorial, August 8, 2008

Please, bear with me, this sounds persuasive but is the logic behind it?

TWO QUESTIONS:

Question on "fundamental right" and "right to marry"
Where does that fundamental right come from? A group of lawmakers, scientists, the majority of a society?
To those lobbying for it? Can someone tell me what we all should be fundamentally basing this decision on - it sounds like some sort of an absolute truth or something.

Question on "traditionally" and "same sex marriage"
How ironic that he is using tradition as a logical basis for establishing recognition among society. What is the traditional definition of marriage ... is same-sex part of that vocabulary, practice and do we have good historical, biological and religous evidence to shape that tradition (I think so generally speaking- see below).

TWO THOUGHTS:

Some thoughts on "fundamental rights" and "right to marry":
This quote from the LA Times presupposes that we all know what FUNDAMENTAL VALUE is being talked about here and WHO decides what is FUNDAMENTAL. In other words, the writer is assuming we all know as a society the moral or ethical foundation of truth we can all go back to and agree upon. Or does he?

WHO determines what is FUNDAMENTAL? Well, without making this a ten page paper, I would say it is hard to have a FUNDAMENTAL (an absolute truth we can all hang our hats on) without a transcendent being (i.e. God. And my biased fundamental) providing the basis for it. Love, justice, beauty, sexuality - think about it, where does those defintions come from originally - chemicals firing in an evolutionary morass at the beginning of time?. Without God (or a god) in ones worldview, one has to have another FUNDAMENTAL to begin with that comes from OUTSIDE oneself.

Does government or society determine the type of FUNDAMENTALS the writer is talking about (there are some good examples but also really bad ones... wait, did I just make a moral judgement on what is good and bad? Think Naziism, Stalinism, Rwandan genocide. Why does the rest of humanity condemn such atrocity)? Sounds good but, take it one step further, is there something beyond society because maybe it TRANSCENDS society? If you say SOCIETY determines that FUNDAMENTAL (such as values like... love your neighbor, same-sex marriage or rape is wrong), then WHICH SOCIETY? And WHO determines that?

Do we notice the slippery slope? I understand not everyone is a believer in God of some kind, let alone a Christian, but to hear these arguments that say No to Prop 8 using ethical language (like fundamental right) begs me to challenge the basis for it. There is probably a lot more to say here but I will leave this here for now (see RZIM, Ravi Zacharias for more on this line of reasoning).

Some thoughts on "traditionally" and "same-sex marriage":
I think it makes sense to retain the terminology of "civil union" for those who want to make a commitment to live a homosexual lifestyle together with a partner but to change the definition of marriage is where the line must be drawn. (Some of these are from Rick Warren's News & Views)

Why are we going to change the definition for marriage for 2% of the population in North America?
Why are we going to change the definition of marriage when all major religions though out history have stated it was between a man and a woman?
Why is there a need to change it now after 5000 years of human existence?
How would humanity have multiplied to the 6 billion people on earth today without the understanding that marriage was between a man and a woman?

My point is this (all-caps below for emphasis not anger):

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE is NOT A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT that is being opposed. It is an OPINION THAT WANTS TO CHANGE THE DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE that is being opposed IN THE FACE of CONTRARY FUNDAMENTAL EVIDENCE (YES on 8).

IT (Yes on 8) IS NOT UNFAIR because FAIR would IMPLY AN INJUSTICE based on a FUNDAMENTAL DEFINITION of what marriage is SUPPOSED TO BE.

SAYING (No on 8), IS CHANGING THE FUNDAMENTAL DEFINITION OF A HISTORICAL, BIOLOGICAL and RELIGOUS TRADITION... A LEGAL and/or RELIGOUS COMMITMENT BETWEEN A MAN AND WOMAN.

I AM VOTING YES on 8

What does this mean for how I treat my family, friends and neighbors that are homosexual?

I lovingly disagree with changing the definition of marriage but I still love my family, friends and neighbors.
If they desire to make a lifelong commitment to a same sex partner at a civil union - I would not oppose that even though I would disagree with the lifestyle choice (I disagree with other lifestyle choices like not exercising or spending over $20 on a haircut).
If they ever want to talk about it personally with me, I would love that.
I still consider anyone gay, straight, bi, trans, "fill in the blank" inherently valuable to God, deeply loved by Him and will treat them with dignity, respect and love as I believe Jesus would.

This is not a term paper or a philosophy test so I have no illusion of being smart or that I have it all figured out. I am sure there are some significant holes in my thinking. Help me understand your perception.

Please share with me what you think and why you plan on voting the way you are.

The Eakin Invasion

Our good friends, The Eakins, that I (Erin) have known since college came to Socal from Denver for Disneyland and sun. It was an awesome 2 hour whirlwind of activity and laughs. Great to see them and have them meet Autumn for the first time. Their kids are Troon (oldest boy), Kendall (girl) and Cameron (youngest boy) - the most active, well spoken and best behaved kids we know. Nice job Evan and Sue!

What Autumn Likes

Over a week of getting to know our daughter, I am starting to learn what she likes (and what she doesn't):

Autumn likes:

1. Her "Perch"
For some reason she is at total peace laying on her back on her changing table. She stares through the blinds at the sunny outside as if on a sunny beach in the Bahamas.

2. To Keep Us Guessing
For twenty minutes at a time she will LOVE being swaddled, shooshed, suckled, etc. but then she likes to be freed from her swaddle and lay on her back unhindered. The next ten minutes it may be reswaddled near the oven fan while sitting in her lil rocking "rain forest themed" chair.

3. Her time with Daddy
Between 5am - 7am in the morning give or take an hour. She tends not to enjoy Daddy between 1am - 5am.

4. The Outside
In brief stints (See #2). Grandma Nanjan has had numerous successful attempts to hold her while outside and even braved a ride or two in the stroller. Daddy tried this once and made it past the front patio before aborting the mission. She does enjoy the car ride but not getting into the car seat.

5. Her Furrowed-Brow
(See videos and pictures below). She is very inquisitive and pensive.

6. To be fed all day and night
"Sorry honey, can't help with that one".

7. To Wait for Grandma to change her
Waiting to save her best for last after Nancy has already cleaned her up.

8. To Scratch Her Initials into Daddy's Neck while he burps her

9. Falling Asleep Anywhere Near or On Mommy

10. To See How Stain Resistant Her Cute Outfits Are

We are so thankful to the Lord for this precious gift!

Autumn Elizabeth Kerr arrived on Thursday, Oct 2, 2008 at 8:52am at St Joseph's, Orange, CA at a stout 8 lbs 7 oz and 20 inches long! Brown hair and blue eyes (for now)... yahoo, thank you Lord for this wonderful blessing! She has already started asking me about the Cowboys game on Sunday - thankfully, we will be able to watch the game together.

We are home and plan on getting our movie files edited and uploaded for your viewing - thanks for all of your prayers and support! We are pumped...oops, now for a diaper change.

Well, here we are...40 weeks tomorrow! Baby Kerr has made it 40 long weeks and now we can't wait for her to make her arrival. I think these last few weeks have been the hardest because of all the anticipation and guessing as to when she'll be born! I am feeling great. As of last Tuesday, I am 1cm dilated (which means nada!) and my doctor said "see you next week!" (clue for "you'll be late!"). Baby Kerr seems to be super comfortable inside, squirming around, but still high up in my abdomen...no dropping signs yet. So, get ready for an October baby and feel free to predict the date!

Erin Gets Contacts

Little did I realize my need for some new glasses would lead me to actually consider contact lenses.

But here I was, ready to try something new, to overcome the annoyance of having GLASSES: to clean the smudges, deal with scratched lenses, forgetting to pull them out of my backpack left in the car... glasses GOOD RIDDANCE. I am ready for FREEDOM AND JOY with CONTACTS!

The appointment set for this morning at 10:20am, I was ready to rock! I went through the rigors of an eye exam, got an updated prescription from the optometrist doctor on site but then...

The reality set in. As I sat in front of a helpful certified optician, getting "trained" in how to put in and take out contacts... I realized that I was simply replacing one annoyance with a new one: Learning to shove a small piece of wet plastic into my eye without adhering to the bodies natural instinct to blink from such an atrocious act.

"It's ok, you are really doing well. Men have it the toughest. They aren't used to putting stuff like make up and things near their eyes. It's a lot easier for women." says Mark, the optician.

Oh, THAT's encouraging.

"Some people, it takes like 45 minutes. Others have had to come back weeks later to try again."

Great. I am really motivated now. Remembering I am pastor and trying to learn from my handy man "fan" experience... I try to be as patient as a little lamb in a pasture full of lilies... ok, you get the point.

After several minutes (not 45 minutes mind you) I finally get the right eye in. And after a few attempts, get the left eye in. Blur, blur, rotate eye up, left, right... good. Hmmmm, does this really help?

"OK, now we have to make sure you can take it out before you leave - here is how to do it."

Ahhhhh, I just got these things in and now I have to SHOW I can take one out. Be the lamb in the lilies... be the lamb in the lilies...

After SEVERAL more minutes, I finally... miraculously... use a pincer motion with my thumb and forefinger and cusp the skin-thin plastic out of my eye feeling almost as satisified as a Dallas Cowboy touchdown.

YESSSS! I am getting the hang of --

"OK great, now will rinse this a bit with your solution and you can put it back in so we can send you on your way."

Great... this sucks.

So I have to show off my homemade curtains! Since I have been "nesting" for the past 2 months, I have tackled numerous projects that aren't even baby related. I've had the fabric for kitchen curtains for over a year and I finally busted out the sewing machine and re-taught myself how to sew (I originally learned from my mom back in high school, but that was over 10 years ago..yikes!). Here is the end product! Now our kitchen is so much more cozy and warm...

I am married to the most patient, persistent, loving (and especially handy!) husband ever! On one of his days off, Erin painted the baby's room all by himself and accomplished it in a matter of hours. He did such a great job. We painted the room a buttercream yellow, more on the neutral side, but definitely cheery! Thanks HONEY, for painting the room, assembling the crib (and other new furniture), hanging a pain-in-the-butt ceiling fan (and one more to come, ughh!), putting up curtain rods and curtains and cleaning out the garage. Baby Kerr can't wait to give you a hug for it all!

So we kind of lost track of exactly what month I am in since I have been going by the number of weeks. So here I am roughly 8 months pregnant. The following picture was taken just about 2 weeks later...so we might be a little off!

Now I'm exactly 9 months pregnant...just 4 weeks to go! I am feeling pretty BIG and more and more tired the farther along I get. Baby girl loves to move around and recently she loves to HICCUP! She gets the hiccups at least 3 times a day! I am officially back to work with 35 5th grade students on Wednesday and a huge belly. I am hoping to teach about 2 1/2 weeks before I pass my job off to a long-term sub and wait for baby Kerr to arrive. Please pray for a safe, timely and healthy delivery! We'll post more soon!

While in Yosemite two weeks ago, my brother (in law), Ben was kind enough to humor me as I re-enacted one of my favorite movies in a little meadow next to the river we were lounging in. Plus, he took some great pregnant photos of Joy and took a bunch of others on our trip to Yosemite.

Not only was he in a recent musical in Redondo Beach, doing somersaults and singing without his shirt on, he is a very talented and sought after photographer - he does fashion, weddings, engagement shoots and more.

The most surprising thing in our 15-minute conversation was hearing him say that he actually thinks Romo has surpassed him in terms of celebrity -- and that he's fine with it.

"It kinda spreads the wealth," he said. "I'm used to all that stuff, so it's nice to see some other guys be in the limelight."

I thought about taking his temperature at this point, but he seemed somewhat lucid. Asked why he seems so content, T.O. talked about his faith.

"My pastor is in prayer for me the minute something goes wrong," he said. "If he hears me say something on TV that he doesn't understand, he'll text me. I just think people are finally realizing that I am a good guy. And it's nice when you have a lot of prayer warriors out there."

I am very cool with that.

WARNING: This is a random entry. Read at your own risk of being bored or disinterested.

For some weird reason, I actually get pumped on tennis when its Wimbledon.

I haven't picked up a tennis raquet since Eakin (my college buddy with nice sunglasses, seen here in this striking photo) and I played a few matches in college to re-live our high school tennis exploits.

And ever since Agassi's competitiveness dimmed with Sampras in the late 90s, I am only concerned really about watching two players play now - Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal.

Roddick, because he seems to be the only decent American male tennis player right now and Nadal because he is the only one that seems to give (1) ranked, 12 grand slam winner, 5 straight Wimbeldon wielding Roger Federer some problems.

I can't stand Federers domination of the sport and I love the Spaniards' "passion"/style of play - smacking the ball as hard and as fast as he can - serving at speeds of 125 mph. And hustling everywhere around the court... my type of player.

So being, Wimbeldon time, I found out Nadal (left) vs Federer (right) were playing in the final today and I actually tivoed the SIX HOUR alloted time (in HD) - it was on from 6am-Noon!

I was actually giddy driving home from church to watch it - so weird. You may have even thought I was going to watch the Dallas Cowboys play or something -- OK, maybe not that excited.

Turned out to be one of the most amazing matches I have ever seen. The level of play was phenomenal.

Nadal is a clay court dominator but has struggled on grass against Fed, never winning at Wimbeldon, but not any more... the 22 yr old, grinded through what seemed to be heart breaking TIEBREAK lossess of the 3 and 4th sets when he could have closed it after winning the first two (6-4, 6-4). Random Hello Kitty here... (Kurian this is for you).

Somehow, someway, Nadal pulled it out after the longest Wimbledon in history with the fifth set going to tiebreaker with Nadal winning 9-7. Way to go NADAL, WE DID IT... FEDERER has been dethroned... through my cheering and your playing. We are a force Rafael. Nice job.

So...typically Erin is the one reviewing signficant and life-changing books he is reading, but today I am blogging about one that is changing me! (since I have a lot more time due to summer vacation and have been able to actually read again). Some of you may have heard about the controversial fictional read called "The Shack." If you haven't I encourage you to check it out and pick it up. The author, William P. Young, wrestles with deeply spiritual concepts, views and stereotypes of typical "christianity" all through narrative format and it is powerful! I am nearly finished with the book and after each chapter, I am forced to sit back, meditate on what I read and pray for God to search my heart and mind. What I am left with is a new-found freedom in my relationship with Christ and a new understanding of the love the Father has for me. On Wednesday night, the author spoke at Mariners Church and I went to hear the background behind the story and his testimony. I am so very interested to hear your thoughts/ponderings after reading the novel and hope to pass this book along to as many friends/family as possible! If my blog seems to be a bit vague, I apologize but I don't want to give too much about the plot away. Keep me posted and happy reading!

Huy and Holli officially became H2DO on May 18th in Malibu at Calamigos Ranch. Sogo and I got to "co-officiate" which was a great way to ruin a wedding - we didn't mess it up too much. Part of the fun was just seeing all of our friends from my college ministry days, Mariners Church, Rock Harbor... and everyone in between. Great location and some memorable picts here.

So....tomorrow is the big day. We hope to find out "Special K's" gender identity with our 20 week ultrasound and check up. I could've found out last week with a secretive ultrasound my doctor was willing to do, except Erin was missing! *Just a baby update: I am feeling great! Definitely looking pregnant now with a "baby bump", although not too prominent yet. Baby K is moving quite often and I feel the little kicks and jabs daily now...what an amazing feeling! Can't wait for Erin to feel the baby soon. My OBGYN doctor is wonderful. He loves the Lord, has a Christian practice and comes highly recommended from several friends and parents (of my students). He even attends Saddleback! God is good! :-)

Clarines Memorial and Picnic

After my trip to Orlando all week for work, I hopped on a two prop engine plane at LAX and flew up to Redding, CA to celebrate the life of my step-grandmother, Clarine Westlie. She was the only Grandmother I ever knew on my mom's side. She had married my Grandfather Winston before I was born - he passed away in 1995.

Sandy, Clarine's daughter, was kind enough to ask me to perform the service. I hadn't seen some of this side of the family since I was 10. It was really cool. So at the memorial, I shared a bit about my memories of Clarine and then talked about REAL HOPE. That because God hates separation, he makes sure we never have to be separated from Him - even with death... because of Jesus (John 14.2-7; John 5.24; Eph 3.18-19).

Clarine was well known for her sense of humor and her amazing cooking talents - apparently all the kids loved her because she was always making cookies, cupcakes and candies for her daughters' classes. She also loved to travel and really encouraged my Grandfather to see the country - I have many memories of them stopping in to visit in their RV.

We shared some great stories of Clarine and also enjoy a picnic at Whiskeytown lake as her reception. It was beautiful and a great day to reconnect with family. The air up there is amazing.

A lot of the pictures are from the bed and breakfast my parents were at called Tiffany's - I think Joy and I might to go up there by ourselves sometime.

Joys Got A New (Used) Car

Joy and Baby K are going to be much safer and more comfortable. We just bought Nancy's (Joy's Mom) 2004 Saturn Vue. My favorite feature is the fact that it has a moon/sunroof... so sweet.

So we are going to have to sell Joy's faithful 1999 Honda Civic, if you know anybody who needs a solid commuter car - just comment below:).

Easter 2008 Saddleback Irvine

Many of you have kindly harassed me for being a blog slacker so I am filling some posts that should be here. This one is fairly important.

Saddleback Irvine Launch! Leading up to launch, we had throngs (no not thongs) of people show up with palms up for Easter saying "How can I help?" - we weren't sure how many people would come so we were pumped when 4:30pm Saturday night, March 22nd, cars actually started to pull in... Saturday 6:30pm as well. And when Sunday morning hit, we were spilling people into the hallways, had parked cars on the grass off our back lot and fire codes were probably stretched a bit. It was awesome.

Pastor Rick preached a powerful message on how to have faith in Jesus (via video feed), our great band led us in worship and tons of our volunteers made sure people felt welcomed and encouraged.

Ephesians 3.20 came to mind as our staff collapsed from emotional, physical and spiritual exhaustion... "Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope."

Well He did. We had 1,830 people show up including kids, over 50 people made decisions to give their lives to following Jesus Christ and 50 others wanted to join or lead small groups. The timeless message of God's gift of grace never gets old. All I can say is WOW GOD.

After the services, Joy's extended family, who had come to the 11am service stuck around for Easter lunch. Even Momma and Poppa Kerr were representing the Norcal side of the family by being here over the weekend for the church launch, Easter, Mom's 60th birthday and 39th wedding anniversary. It was great to have all the support and community over the weekend from family but I was so tired afterwards... I ended up taking a nap after I ate:). What a weekend... now next week.

Well - its finally time. I am so proud of our team (from lake forest and irvine). They have had a "whatever it takes" attitude. No task is too small, no detail too insignificant. Long hours, lots of manual labor and lots of driving/unloading.They have been humbling me to check my own heart - I want to serve like that too!

Our first preview service at the new Irvine campus is tomorrow. At this point, it will be a good test run and fairly bare bones but enough to get a sense of how the weekend experience will be like. Most importantly, we have had a ton of prayer for the last few months leading up to this so it should be a blast.

(BTW - CLOCKS AHEAD at 2am SUNDAY - YEP, we lose an hour of sleep!)

Marvelously Made

Joy and I have a new appreciation for this (Psalms 139:1-6, 13-16):

"God, investigate my life; get all the facts firsthand. I'm an open book to you; even from a distance, you know what I'm thinking. You know when I leave and when I get back; I'm never out of your sight. You know everything I'm going to say before I start the first sentence. I look behind me and you're there, then up ahead and you're there, too— your reassuring presence, coming and going. This is too much, too wonderful— I can't take it all in!

Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother's womb. I thank you, High God—you're breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration—what a creation! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
